College Applications

by Jeff Flott

August 29, 2007

Most college and university applications are available online at the specific school website (usually listed under prospective students or admissions). Depending on the school the applications can either be filled out and submitted online or printed and mailed in.  Either way it is a good idea to read the entire form before you complete it and make a photocopy of the form. Complete the photocopy and show it to your counselor.  Then, transfer the information from the copy to the original.

Obtain all application materials from the college or university.
Apply online or print off a paper application from the university's admissions website
or
Request that an application be sent to you by calling the office of admissions or requesting information from the university's website or
Follow Directions closely. Make sure you know all the parts necessary to complete your file.

COLLEGE APPLICATION CONTENTS:
Completed paper application with signature (n/a if you applied online)
Check for the application fee or a fee waiver
Essay or personal statement if needed
Supplemental information (resume, portfolio, etc.) if needed
Counselor/Secondary School Report if needed
Teacher Recommendations if needed

Sign and date the application.

Each college or university will ask you to send a transcript of your high school work. Have the office send a transcript to each school you apply.

Make arrangements to have your standardized test (ACT) scores reported to your college of choice (if you did not do so on the ACT). This official notification is required; it is not sufficient to report your scores on the application form.

REMEMBER:
Priority filing deadline dates.
Inform your counselor when admissions decisions are received (accepted, denied, wait listed or deferred).

Application Essay

Many colleges now require a personal statement or essays to help understand what makes you different from other candidates (often admission counselors are faced with many applicants with similar grade point averages and ACT scores).

Tips:
Make a point.
Illustrate it with details
Prepare for the essay before you write it
Carefully check spelling and grammar
