Kempton Elem. Teacher Pages: Mrs. Hughes

Reading

by Kim Hughes

October 04, 2007

We are reading a story called Hippo's Toothache.  This story is about Harry the Hippo, who lives in the jungle and has a horrible toothache.  His animal friends try to help him and decide that they should pull out his tooth.  One by one, they try unsuccessfully to extract the tooth.  Finally, the tooth is pulled, but the story has a surprised ending.  In this story, the students will be learning to make predictions.  Predicting what is going to happen next is a way for children to guide their own reading.  They will want to know whether or not their predictions where correct.  This gives them specific goals while reading and improves both comprehension and recollection.

Mrs. Palmore is also reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We have just begun to read the story and are looking forward to finding out what will happen to Charlie.
