5th Grade Fan Cars

The 5th Grade Science Class is working in teams of two to build the fastest race cars powered by fans. The materials they have been using are a motor, fan blade, AA battery, straws, tongue depressors, axle, and wheels. They will race down the hall to see who is the fastest. The winner will keep their cars and the losers' cars will be kept for parts. They have been working for 3 days and are almost ready to race.
They are learning knowledge of Newton’s Law of Motion, about inertia and force, and how for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. They are learning how those scientific laws apply to race cars. Many key parts of the scientific process are in action experimentation, modification of designs, careful observation, measuring results, and communicating discoveries. The 5th graders love it and are excited about Race Day! Mrs. Diane Zimmerman is the teacher for this project.
