Tri-Point Robotics Class

By Jared, 7th grade computer class student

January 11, 2010

At Tri-Point in Mr. Saffer’s enrichment class students Katy, Hannah, and Danielle are building a robot. When we interviewed them this is what they said:

Hannah
Why did you choose robotics?
I chose robotics because it looked challenging and fun.
What exactly did you do (or create) for this activity? We created a robot that does a variety of different things.
What was the best part of robotics? When we accomplished the hardest level which was to make the robot hit the red ball.
What problems or difficulties did you experience?
When I put a certain number in and then clicked a button and it changed and we got it wrong.
What did you learn from your robotics project? I learned that when it comes to robotics you need to have a team or it won’t work out because we wouldn’t have finished without teamwork.

Danielle
Why did you choose robotics?
I chose robotics because the building and assembly of the programs just looked fun and interesting.
What exactly did you do (or create) for this activity?
We created a robot that would do all different programs like hitting a red ball, detecting lines, and driving like a car would.
What was the best part of robotics? The best part was building the robot and getting the robot to do what it is supposed to do.
What problems or difficulties did you experience? I experienced rebuilding the whole entire robot because one part was messed up. That time we got it right
What did you learn from your robotics project? I learned from my project that it’s not easy to build robots. The programming for just one assignment takes time. It’s fun when the project is all done!

Katy
Why did you choose robotics?
I chose robots because I thought it would be so cool to create a machine that could do things a human could do.
What exactly did you do (or create) for this activity?
What you do is build a little robot and program it to perform twenty simple tasks. These tasks include detecting sound and motion. It can even be programmed to tell the difference between colors. The little robot almost becomes a pet. It’s so fun.
What was the best part of robotics?
The best part was seeing what I built come to “life”. When I was putting the pieces together, it seemed hopeless, but once I saw my robot performing these tasks. I remember I kept going. That’s the best part.
What problems or difficulties did you experience? Assembling the robot was hard. Sometimes, the robot doesn’t “cooperate”, and we have to start at the beginning again.
What did you learn from your robotics project?
I learned that robots are totally awesome, and they can do amazing things.
