Dr. Seuss activities will run March 11 – 16, 2010.  We have put this off a few days so that it is NOT during ISAT testing time.  It will be a fun activity for when students are done.  The days will focus on connecting the literacy skills of reading, writing, and listening to the books of Dr. Seuss.

Daily school activities include:

ThursdayPajama Day— The featured books are I’m Not Going to Get Up Today, The Sleep Book, and Dr Seuss’s ABC.  Students are encouraged to wear their PJ’s or sweats to school to GET COMFORTABLE WITH READING

Friday ---Mixed-Up Sock & Shoe Day—The featured books are The Foot Book and Fox in Socks.  Students may wear mismatched socks and shoes to GET A FOOT UP ON READING

Dr Seuss bookmarks will be given to all students on this day.

Monday—Hat Day—students will be encouraged to wear their favorite hats this day.  The featured book will be The Cat in the Hat.  Hats Off to Reading is the theme for the day.

Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was given the challenge to write a children’s book with 250 words or less that children could read themselves.  The Cat in the Hat was born with 236 kid-friendly words.  He wanted to write books that children would find fun to read.  Read with us at home if you can.

Cat in the Hat pencils will be given today to use in writing projects to connect with Dr. Seuss books.

Tuesday—Green and Yellow Day—students are encouraged to wear green or yellow.   The Featured books will be Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Sneetches.

Third-Grade readers will read appropriate Dr. Seuss books to the Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First-grade, and Second-grade classes. (Third Grade will have their reader earlier to get them started on their Class ABC book.)  A related activity will follow the books.

Dr. Seuss Reading Spree all week

Slips will be sent home on Wednesday to be collected on Thursday-Tuesday mornings.  Each book read by a student (or read to a student) will be entered into a drawing for a Dr. Seuss book.  A guardian must sign that the book was read.  I will have the drawing Tuesday after the slips are collected from each room so I can give out the book prizes before going home on Tuesday.

Help your child read to be entered every day—But most of all, enjoy this reading time together.

Develop a “reading habit” that will last a lifetime!

Each day students will use computer lab time to explore the Dr. Seuss website- http://www.seussville.com  for facts about Dr. Seuss and more fun learning activities

It promises to be a fun-filled week of literacy learning!
