by Don Emerson

August 14, 2017

How to Calculate Your GPA

  1. For each class, multiply the grade points defined for the grade (A=4, etc.) by the credit of  the course (usually 0.5)
  2. Add all of the Total Grade Points
  3. Add all of the Total Credits (usually 4.0)
  4. Divide the sum of the Grade Points by the Total Credits

Grade Points (add 1.0 point for weighted courses)
A+ =  4.3 pts
A  = 4.0 pts
A- = 3.7 pts
B+ = 3.3 pts
B  = 3.0 pts
B- = 2.7 pts
C+ = 2.3 pts
C  = 2.0 pts
C- = 1.7 pts
D+ = 1.3 pts
D  = 1.0 pt
D- = 0.7 pts

Example:

Class Grade Points Credits Attempted Grade Points
Algebra A 4.0 0.5 2.0
World Social Studies B 3.0 0.5 1.5
Physical Science C+ 2.3 0.5 1.15
PE A 4.0 0.5 2.0
English I B 3.0 0.5 1.5
Band A- 3.7 0.5 1.85
Art A 4.0 0.5 2.0
Spanish I B+ 3.3 0.5 1.65
Total     4.0 13.65

13.65 /4.0 = 3.4125

Semester GPA = 3.41

To Find the Cumulative Grade Point Average, add the the Total Grade Points from each Semester and divide by the Total number of Credits Attempted.
