Develop a survey to find out what people feel is important about their jobs. Use the following list of reasons for your survey:
1. Paycheck satisfies realistic lifestyle desires
2. High level of skill provides security and job choices
3. Job provides prestige at work, home and in the community
4. Co-workers are cooperative and supportive
5. Management has a high regard for the worker's performance
6. Work is interesting and requires the worker's full ability
7. Work tasks are valued by the worker
8. Paycheck covers more than basic necessities
9. Seniority and job skills provide some security
10. Job provides respect at work, at home, and for peers
11. Co-workers are usually pleasant
12. Supervisor usually approves of worker's performance
13. Work is usually interesting
14. Tasks sometimes require full use of worker's skills
15. Paycheck covers basic food, shelter, and clothing
16. Security depends on the economy and approval of supervisor
17. Job is considered menial by others
18. Most co-workers are unpleasant or unconcerned
19. Supervisor is demanding and lacks understanding
20. Work is boring and repetitious
Then list a number scale after each reward. For example:
Reason Not Important Very Important
Paycheck satisfies realistic lifestyle desires 1 2 3 4 5
Ask 10 people to take the survey. Instruct people to circle the number that indicates how important that item is to them. After 10 people have completed the survey, total the numbers circled for each item on the survey. For example, if in response to the item "Paycheck satisfies realistic lifestyle desires", 4 people marked 3, 5 people marked 5, and 1 person marked 2, the total for that item would be 39. After you have totaled the points for each item on the survey, rank the items in order from the one with the highest total to the one with the lowest total. Type or write out your results and place the completed report in my mailbox.
