Stepping Back in Time

By Kayla B.-8th grade computer class student
February 02, 2010

4th grade students have been studying Legends in their Reading class.  Through the use of several literary works students were introduced to different Native American cultures.

Students were surprised to find Mrs. Walter's room sealed off.  Unbeknownst to the students they would be introduced to a special guest at the start of their day.  Upon entering Mrs. Walter's room students found nontraditional music playing in the background, unusual items displayed at the back of the room and a man in somewhat unusual clothing.  Introductions were soon made and Mr. Dave Harms, our guest speaker, was engaging the students with his knowledge of Native Americans.

While Mr. Harms talked to the class he presented and passed around the many items he brought.  Students were able to touch several different animal hides and leather such as elk, deer, coyote, rabbit, beaver, and fox.  Other items students examined were handmade Native American dresses, shawls, moccasins, pants, shirts, and leggings.  Not only did Mr. Harms bring in the items listed above, but he also brought in Native American music.  Students learned two different dance steps and then practiced around the room.

While time with Mr. Harms wound down he still had another lesson to teach.  Throughout the day students asked how do we say …in Native American.  While each Native American tribe has their own spin on the language, Mr. Harms was able to teach the students and Mrs. Walter several Sioux words and phrases.  The students did an excellent job picking up the language and using it appropriately when speaking with another individual.

Towards the very end of our time with Mr. Harms, he presented each student with a tipi he made just for them.  Students were able to design the outside of their tipi to match their personality.  Once students were done Mr. Harms tied the tipi together with sinew.  With few seconds left in the day we said thank you to Mr. Harms for his special presentation and memorable gift.  I suppose more appropriate words to Mr. Harms would be pilamiya Ta min zintkala.
