Subject: Student Attendance
Date: September 3, 2014
Attendance at school is one of the most important factors that influence success in school. Recently, the Illinois State Board of Education revised the definition of a chronic truant to include any student that is absent from school over 5 days in a semester without a doctor’s note or an excuse for an appointment or activity outside of the control of the family. A recent school report card indicates that the attendance rate for Tri-Point Schools is below the state average.
This last spring, members of the Parent/Teacher Advisory Committee worked long hours to revise the attendance policy at Tri-Point Schools. In part, the new policy reads:
- When a student is absent, the parents/guardians should notify the school by 10:00 a.m.
- Students may have an unlimited number of absences that include;
- Doctor’s/Dentist Note
- Court Appearance
- Death in the family
- Immediate Family Vacation
- Students may only have 5 days absent (excused) for reasons not included above
- Additional days absent beyond the days listed above will be considered to be unexcused
- Students may have negative consequences for unexcused absences.
One of the biggest consequences for students in elementary school that accumulate unexcused absences will be to miss recess or “Special” classes to receive make-up instruction or to complete make-up or incomplete school work. Please call the school at (815) 253-6299 if you have any questions.
