First Day of School 8/18/26

The prairie cicada reintroduction group continued work transplanting some of the rare insects to Don Gardner's prairie in Kempton this week. The cicadas love the heat - and the kids caught several near Paxton with hopes of establishing a population at the protected site near the elementary school in town. Pru caught the first one, and Gavin and Phoebe chased down a few as well. This is the 4th full year of the project and they hope that the offspring of the first cicadas they introduced in 2022 will successfully emerge from the ground next year. Prairie cicadas are only found in a very small number of good prairies in Illinois, and the students hope to be able to expand their populations into reconstructed prairie sites.
