Thanks to ATS Acoustics in Piper City for their generous Propel grant of $2500 towards the purchase of two new stoves and supplies for the new junior high science kitchen. The last hour exploratory class students have been busy trying them out, making apple pies, tamales, and lots of crepes! The science classes will study fermentation and respiration by making yeast pretzels, pickles, and sauerkraut. Students are also welcome to come by during recess to make cookies, fry up some eggs, or make cupcakes. The kids are learning a lot about following instructions, measurement (a tablespoon of salt is NOT the same as a teaspoon) and the practical skills of food preparation. Don't tell them, but they're also learning about biology, chemistry, and nutrition. The induction stove is also a great opportunity to learn about how waves interact. Some of the students are even developing the skill of washing dishes. Their next cooking project is to make a big batch of cookies (including gluten-free ones) to thank the folks at ATS Acoustics for their support!
